Apply a Decorative and Epoxy Countertop Coating

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

Sand the existing countertop surface lightly and roll on Stoneffects Step 1 Primer Coat using a standard paint roller.

Step 2: Apply Stone Coat and Sealer

Using a trowel, apply Stoneffects Step 2 Stone Coat and seal with Stoneffects Step 3 Sealer. Allow to dry for 24 hours before proceeding. Using 180-220 grit sandpaper, sand the stone coating in order to remove any high spots or trowel marks. Wipe with a damp cloth, or vacuum to remove any remaining grit and dust.

Step 3: Mix the Epoxy

At room temperature, combine Stoneffects Clear Epoxy Countertop Coating (Parts A and B), and mix thoroughly for approximately 3 minutes. Do not use a power mixer. Prior to applying the epoxy, mask off all adjacent surfaces and use a drop cloth on the floor beneath the countertop.

Step 4: Apply and Spread the Epoxy

Immediately after mixing, pour the epoxy on the countertop. Using a good quality natural or synthetic brush spread the epoxy toward the perimeter, backsplash and edges of the countertop. When these areas are coated, spread the remainder of the mixture toward the centre of the countertop. Two coats may be required on vertical surfaces. While the epoxy is still wet, use a heat gun to remove any air bubbles that form. Do not overheat the epoxy. Level any high spots when the coating has started to set, but is still soft. Use a metal scraper and run lightly across the surface of the coating.

Step 5: Allow the Epoxy to Set

Remove masking tape immediately after application. The applied epoxy will set in 24 hours, with a full cure in 72 hours (based on room temperature of 21C or 70F). The countertop will take light usage after 24 hours.
